Akron Children’s Hospital’s Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders is expanding the Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant service to include inpatient physician nocturnist coverage.
The in-house provider team will be comprised of 6 Advanced Practice Providers for daytime coverage and 2 pediatricians/nocturnists and 3 Advance practice providers for overnight coverage.
We are seeking BE/BC physicians with Pediatric, Pediatric Hospital Medicine, and/or Pediatric Hematology/Oncology training to join our growing team.
This position will cover overnight (6pm-7am) working approximately 13 shifts per 4-week period from 6 pm – 7 am.
An attending pediatric hematologist/oncologist and/or fellow would always be available for questions.
These positions will provide high quality coverage at Akron Children’s Hospital’s Hematology/Oncology unit.
Responsibilities include: Providing on-site care of the hospitalized hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant patients during overnight hours.
This would involve performing health assessments, physician examinations, ordering and interpretation of tests, monitoring of medications, initiating treatment plans Admit patients with hematology, oncology, or transplant-related problems overnight to the hematology oncology service Evaluate and care for established hematology/oncology/transplant patients overnight in the observation unit for typical problems associated with these diagnoses Respond to calls from parents of established hematology/oncology/transplant patients overnight Documenting admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, and discharge summaries as required Assisting with and facilitating discharge planning The Showers Center Team includes 11 board-certified pediatric hematologists-oncologists, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, certified pediatric oncology nurses, pharmacists, clinical research associates, child life specialists, social workers, psychologists, and educators.
There is close collaboration with other specialty departments throughout the hospital.
On average, the team cares for 8 newly diagnosed children with cancer each month.
As a member of Children's Oncology Group (COG), Akron Children’s Hospital participates in the development of National Cancer Institute-approved treatment protocols and offer the most up-to-date cancer therapies.
Therapy offered includes hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Our program is one of only about a dozen pediatric cancer programs in the country verified by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
As a major teaching institution affiliated with Northeast Ohio Medical University, we also train future doctors who want to specialize in pediatric hematology-oncology through our ACGME-accredited fellowship training program.
The Showers Family Center includes specialized teams and programs focused on sickle cell anemia, bleeding/clotting disorders, childhood cancer survivorship, neuro-oncology, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation, vascular anomalies, and neurofibromatosis.
