6235 Job Summary: The Electrical Design Technician works under the supervision of Electric Engineer to prepare and produce electrical engineering designs, schematics, and drawings for construction and maintenance projects.
The Electrical Design Technician will be responsible for reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings and diagrams, creating electrical layouts, providing technical support during project implementation, and ensuring that designs meet safety codes and standards.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following tasks: Reviews and interprets engineering drawings and diagrams for existing substation structures and equipment.
Creates and revises electrical and mechanical engineering designs, schematics, drawings, and documentation for transmission and distribution projects from scope documents, protection specifications, engineering sketches and / or verbal instructions using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
Prepares material lists, bills of materials, cost estimates, and specifications for substation construction projects.
Assists in preparing applications and supporting documentation for engineering permits when necessary.
Assists in researching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work.
Prepares drafts for purchase requisitions and blanket releases for substation projects.
Assists with material reviews and prepares approval letters for vendor equipment drawings including, but not limited to, large power transformers, high voltage circuit breakers, and high voltage capacitor banks.
Works collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and other technicians to provide technical support during project implementation.
Coordinates with technical personnel to gather and record data for substation design projects and complete as-built and record print revisions from marked drawings.
Supports communication across business units regarding project needs.
Contributes to a safe environment for substation field personnel, co-workers, contractors, and the general public.
Cross-checks drawings for consistency and completeness, reviews quality of information provided on the drawings.
Meets with internal staff and/or contractors as needed for job progress reviews; coordinates equipment shipping schedules; keeps records of contractor manpower and material usage; maintains a construction log of significant construction milestones; investigates job-site issues concerning assembly and erection of substation equipment.
Field checks contractor layout work and with approval of supervisor answers questions and provides interpretations of specifications and drawings.
Alerts supervision to the existence and nature of serious problems and job-site issues.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Familiarity with substation design and electrical systems principles, including layout, equipment placement, grounding, and lightning protection.
Knowledge of various materials and equipment used in substation construction, including transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and other substation components.
Knowledge of electrical safety procedures and guidelines related to substation design and construction; including lockout/tagout, arc flash protection, and other safety measures.
Understanding of project management principles, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
Familiarity with construction practices and techniques, including knowledge of civil and structural engineering concepts.
Understanding of industry codes and standards related to substation design, including IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and IEC.
Ability to assist in the management of substation upgrade projects and new substation projects.
Ability to wire control/relay circuits per approved wiring diagrams.
Proficiency in computer-aided drafting (CAD) software.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Ability to learn misc.

Good organizational skills.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and other technical documents related to substation design.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team.
Attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to maintain precise records and documentation.
Strong problem-solving skills to identify and resolve issues in substation designs.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and other technicians to provide technical support during project implementation.
Minimum Requirements for Employment: The selected candidate must possess all of the following requirements: Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Possession of a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to obtain same within six months of hire, along with a driving record which will permit insurance under the city's insurance policy.
Any combination of training and experience which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
Examples of acceptable qualifications may include: Technical school, college, and/or work experience in AutoCAD.
Training in general construction, electric utility, substations, and transmission and/or distribution.
Special Information: Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of criminal background checks, employment reference checks, physical examination and a pre-employment drug screen.
