Position Summary The Manager of Independent Research and Development is responsible for the coordination of all Independent Research & Development (IR&D) activities within the Division and across to other Aerospace Divisions with particular emphasis on developing breakthrough technologies consistent with strategic objectives.
Secures funding and support from outside sources such as government agencies, universities and industry consortiums.
Manages all intellectual property including patents, trade secrets, copyrights and trademarks.
Ensures Aerospace Group policies and procedures are implemented.
Responsibilities · Chief architect of Division technology strategy ensuring alignment with customer needs and business strategy.
Seeks cross-SBU and group-wide input from technical specialists in constructing technology strategies.
· Manages technology roadmaps and shapes associated IR&D projects.
· Ensures IR&D projects are successfully executed to mature technologies and ready them for introduction into new products.
· Conducts continuous searches for new or adaptable technologies, materials and processes to enhance and improve the business.
Champions those with significant revenue generating potential.
· Responsible for identifying and leveraging the funding and support available from outside sources such as universities and other agencies to further the Division technology agenda and to gain a broader perspective of developing technologies both within and outside of our industry.
· Defines KPIs and targets for all technology development activities (aligned to business requirements).
Reports progress against targets and takes necessary action to meet targets.
· Manages the IR&D talent pool to ensure the breadth and depth of talent is at the highest level to achieve Division objectives.
· Accesses specialist support from any Centres of Engineering Excellence where such support is required to achieve objectives.
· Ensures best practice sharing across the Division for engineering expertise, tools, techniques, methods and ways of working.
· Responsible for managing all aspects of the Division’s intellectual property.
· Insures the Division IP policies and procedures comply with Aerospace Group guidelines.
· Responsible for establishing and implementing procedures for the collection of invention disclosures, evaluation of novelty and competitive or commercial attractiveness, and preparation of and prosecution of patent applications as appropriate.
· Responsible for the maintenance of the Division’s existing IP portfolio including strategic and economic management of patents, trade secrets, copyright and trademark related issues and activities.
· Responsible for acquiring new relevant IP that supports the Division’s and Parker’s technology and market objectives.
· In cooperation with Parker Legal, responsible for protecting the Division’s IP position and identifying and opposing third party claims which are contrary to the Division interests.
· Provide leadership to regulatory issues and activities such as REACH, NESHAP, ISO14001 and material obsolescence.
· Operates as a member of the Engineering Leadership Team, contributing the IR&D perspective to Division management direction-setting and decision-making.
· Maintains senior technical relationships with customers, regulatory authorities and industry bodies.
· Acts as a company ambassador for defined technology areas.
· Carries out other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education: Bachelor degree required; science or engineering field preferred.
Post-graduate qualifications are an asset.
Experience: Minimum five (5) years experience being responsible for the coordination of all Independent Research & Development (IR&D) activities Skills: · Recognition as a professionally qualified Engineer is an asset.
· Demonstrated ability to interpret technology and market trends as a foundation for technology and product roadmaps.
· A track record of successful leadership in achieving excellence in engineering and technology in the aerospace or high technology sectors.
· Excellent decision-making, planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience and confidence in public speaking, report-writing and dealing with aircraft and engine OEMs as well as universities and governments.
Foreign language skills are an asset.
· Thorough knowledge of airworthiness certification requirements and other regulatory bodies as well as company procedures, work instructions and quality manuals.
· Working knowledge of PCs in the current company operating system environment.
· Ability to travel.
